The Little Mountain Goat Who Was Afraid of High Places

by Chaplain Joy Le Page Smith

This children’s book and YouTube video is about family, faith and forgiveness and learned experiences for successful living.

Through this heartwarming picture book, children will find it easy to relate to Sib, the little mountain goat who is afraid to climb. Bullied by his twin brother, Bill, and lacking confidence in himself, Sib experiences the challenges many young children often face.

Sib masters his fears through perseverance, determination and faith. He comes to know he was created to succeed and can do what he thought he could never achieve. Ultimately, healing comes to these two brothers as Bill learns the importance of saying he is sorry. Through the power of forgiveness, the two become close friends, leaping on high rocky cliffs as they explore the mountain tops together.

Discussion questions at the end of the book help engage children in conversation about their own troublesome experiences and of the feelings surrounding their difficulties. As parents, grandparents or teachers listen and show compassion, the child knows he or she is accepted and cared about. This type of discussion can offer children the opportunity to find words to describe a situation they have previously been unable to talk about.

This story, recommended for ages 4-10, is intended to strengthen a child’s faith in her or his abilities, increase their understanding of how to deal with a bullying friend or family member, and help them overcome fears that can stymie life’s happy experiences.
