On loneliness and feeling “lost”

By Joy Le Page Smith, MA, BCC

“There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing, but only by God the Creator made known through Jesus Christ.” This is a quote of Basil Pascal (1625-1662).

Pascal was among the brightest of men–a French mathematician, inventor, philosopher and physicist who invented and constructed a calculating device, the Pascaline. This was the first digital calculator counting integers.

In reading about Basil Pascal’s life, what seems clear is that the hunger of his soul drew him to the Bible, the most powerful book we people in the world have been favored to have and to hold. Reading it brought Pascal to Jesus Christ. Consequently, he found the experience of God through the heart rather than through any method of human reasoning.

Like billions of souls before him, Pascal found God’s presence through reading the Scriptures. He witnessed the power of its truth which brings hope, comradery and comfort to all who use it to find guidance in life.

Have you ever wondered who Jesus Christ is–and why so many billions of

people have—and currently are—following His teachings?

If the Holy Bible is read with an open heart then what God has always intended for human kind becomes clear. Without such a read the intrigue and thrill of following God’s way other than our own is beyond our grasp. God’s truth has to be lived to be comprehended as the one and only thing that fills the souls of all who once felt empty, confused, or disappointed by life.

Check your soul’s response as you read the following Scripture passages:

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord, though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool,” (Isaiah 1:18).

“For I know the thoughts I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call on Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found of you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity,” (Jeremiah 29:11-1).

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father’s house there are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know,” The disciple Thomas said, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me,’” (John 14:1-6).

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me,” (Revelations 3:20).

May the Holy Spirit of Jesus be with you.
